We are originally from the South-West of Germany, a region called Baden, only a stone throw away from the Alsace in France and Basel in Switzerland. The region of the three countries has a long and deep tradition of phantastic food & wine and is famous for its hospitality. It is also called the "Tuscany of Germany" and is very similar to the Okanagan valley. Due to its warmer than average weather and the unlimited high end natural food resources from regional farms, waters and forests the Okanagan and the German region of Baden are privileged. One says, that children of this part of the world are born with a special palate. Consequently Stefan not only followed his career path as a management consultant, but also tried to learn as much as possible when working (for fun !) in some of the high end restaurants and wineries of the regions. On top his vacations always followed a track of wine regions, restaurants or cooking schools from Barcelona, Spain or Munich, Germany to Siena, Italy and Paris, France. Back then just to satisfy his personal passion for good food & wine. Consequently he worked in several highly acclaimed Restaurants in Germany and Switzerland, among them a Michelin Star Restaurant, a successful high end winery, attended the Culinary Institute of America in St.Helena (Napa Valley, USA), the parillas in the Mercado Del Puerto in Montevideo, Uruguay and the famous Sydney Seafood School in Sydney, Australia.
After working succesfully for many years in management consulting and finance and for fun in the culinary world, we arrived in British Columbia to start over after Stefan suffered a serious accident in the early 2000nds ... and so he became a cowboy... ! On our ranch in the South Cariboo region we built a luxurious guest lodge and started welcoming guests soon after. Over the years the news of the beauty and luxury of Double Hills Ranch & Lodge along with the culinary experience combined with the love for good wine was spread deep into the travelling foodie community and guests were arriving from all over the world, not only for the beauty of the ranch or the food, but also for one of the most amazing wine lists, at one time featured in an international gourmet magazine. Aside from his Ranch & Lodge responsibilities he also worked as a consultant in the hospitality industry, took over and turned around troubled restaurant kitchens and was participating in many well known events like the Okanagan Wine Festival or the Vancouver German Christmas Market with his wood fired oven.
We must have done something right, as we were very positively mentioned in one of the finest Food & Travel magazines in Europe "Der Feinschmecker", severall newspapers and magazines in BC and have been awarded the "Award Of Excellence" in 2014 and 2015 from our guests voting at the world's biggest tourism platform "Booking.com". In December of 2015, CBC Television shot a report including an interview by Gloria Makarenko at the Vancouver German Christmas Market featuring the traditional fire baked "Flammkuchen" ( French / German style flatbread).
After almost 10 years Double Hills Ranch & Lodge was sold and in summer of 2016 we started a new venture with our Gourmet Catering & Consulting Company including our food truck. We are hoping to add a little more colour and variety to the Fine Food & Wine Scene in BC and in particular in the Okanagan.
Welcome & Enjoy ...
